What Is AEO? A Plain-English Guide to Answer Engine Optimization
By Silicon Valley SEO · Last updated
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your brand the source that AI assistants name and cite when someone asks them a question. Those assistants include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google’s AI Overviews.
AEO is also called generative engine optimization (GEO) or AI search optimization. The names differ, but the goal is the same: when a buyer asks an AI “what’s the best tool for X?”, your company is in the answer and your page is the source it links to.
Why does AEO matter now?
More buyers now start research by asking an AI assistant instead of typing keywords into a search box. The assistant reads sources, writes one answer, and names a few brands. If you aren’t one of them, you may never make the buyer’s shortlist, even if you rank well in classic search results.
AEO doesn’t replace SEO. It extends it to a new place where buying decisions start.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO earns your page a ranked link in search results. AEO earns your brand a mention inside the AI-written answer itself. They share the same foundation, so most companies need both.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in Google or Bing | Be named and cited in AI answers |
| Where it shows | Search results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| What the user sees | A list of links | One written answer with a few sources |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks, organic leads | Mention rate, citation rate, share of answer |
| Content style | Pages targeted to keywords | Answer-first, quotable, evidence-backed |
| Shared foundation | Crawlable pages, schema, authority, useful content | Same |

How do AI assistants choose which sources to cite?
AI assistants with search cite pages they can crawl, that clearly answer the question, and that come from sources they have reason to trust. No company publishes its exact ranking rules, but Google and OpenAI do document the basics.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations beyond normal SEO. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google’s advice is the standard list: allow crawling, link to key pages internally, keep important content in text, and make structured data match the visible page. (Google Search Central)
- ChatGPT search: OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to find pages for ChatGPT search, and sites that block it won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot, a separate crawler, is for model training. (OpenAI crawler docs)
- Across assistants: sources that are well linked, frequently mentioned by other credible sites, and written with a direct answer up front tend to be easier for any AI system to find and quote.
The practical takeaway: AEO is not a trick. It is strong SEO plus content shaped for quoting, plus making sure AI crawlers are allowed in.
What does AEO work involve?
A complete AEO program has six parts. Each one builds on normal SEO and adds what AI answers need.
- AI visibility audit. Run real buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews. Record whether you’re mentioned, whether you’re cited, and who appears instead.
- Prompt and query research. List the questions buyers ask at each stage, from “what is X” to “X vs Y” to “best X for Y.” Assign each one to a page that should own the answer.
- Answer-first content restructuring. Open each key page with a direct one- or two-sentence answer. Use question-style headings, short paragraphs, lists, and tables.
- Schema markup. Add Organization, Service, Article, FAQPage, and Person structured data that matches what’s visible on the page.
- Technical fixes. Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, keep content in server-rendered HTML rather than hidden behind JavaScript, and keep pages fast.
- Ongoing AI answer monitoring. Re-run the same set of questions every month to see what changed.
Some teams also add an llms.txt file, a plain-text list of a site’s key pages for AI tools. It is cheap to add, but Google says it doesn’t need special AI text files, so treat it as optional.
How do you measure AEO?
Measure AEO by tracking how often AI assistants mention and cite you for a fixed set of buyer questions, month over month. AI answers vary between runs, so look at the pattern, not one answer.
| Metric | What it tells you | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | Share of prompts where your brand is named | Run each prompt several times per assistant; count mentions |
| Citation rate | Share of prompts where your page is linked as a source | Same runs; count your URLs in the sources |
| Share of answer | How often you appear compared with competitors | Count competitor mentions in the same runs |
| AI referral traffic | Visits arriving from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar | GA4, filtered by referral source |
| AI Overviews traffic | Clicks from Google’s AI features | Included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type |
Keep the prompt list stable for at least a quarter, so changes reflect your work rather than a different question set.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Yes, for practical purposes. Both mean optimizing to appear in AI-generated answers. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the newer, more academic term.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AI assistants with search lean heavily on pages that are crawlable, indexed, and well linked, which is exactly what SEO builds. AEO adds answer-first content and AI-specific monitoring on top.
Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will mention my brand?
No. AI answers change with the model, the wording of the question, and the user. Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed AI citations.
How long does AEO take to work?
Technical fixes, like allowing AI crawlers, can take effect within days or weeks. Content and authority gains usually take a few months to show up in AI answers.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It’s optional. It is quick to add and may help some tools, but Google says AI Overviews need no special AI files, and strong content matters far more.
