SEO vs AEO: What's the Difference, and Which Do You Need?
By Silicon Valley SEO · Last updated
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO (search engine optimization) gets your pages ranked in Google’s list of results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your brand named and cited inside the answers that AI assistants write. SEO competes for a click; AEO competes for a mention.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical query | Short keywords: “soc 2 software” | Full questions: “What SOC 2 tool fits a 50-person startup?” |
| What the user gets | Ten or so links to choose from | One written answer naming a few brands |
| How you win | Rank high enough to be clicked | Be the source the AI quotes or recommends |
| Main platforms | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews |
| Key metrics | Rankings, clicks, organic conversions | Mention rate, citation rate, share of answer |
| How results vary | Fairly stable rankings day to day | Answers can change between runs of the same prompt |
| Measurement tools | Search Console, rank trackers, GA4 | Repeated prompt testing, GA4 AI referrals, Search Console |
New to the term? Start with What is AEO?
Where do SEO and AEO overlap?
Most of the work overlaps. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization beyond normal SEO, and a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a source (Google Search Central). ChatGPT search relies on OpenAI’s own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to find pages (OpenAI).
Shared foundation, which both need:
- Crawlable, indexable pages with content in plain HTML
- Clear internal linking to your most important pages
- Structured data that matches the visible page
- Helpful content written by people with real expertise
- Links and mentions from credible sites
Where do they split?
AEO adds work that SEO alone often skips:
- Answer-first writing. The first one or two sentences answer the question directly, so they can be quoted cleanly.
- Question-level targeting. You plan for full conversational prompts, not just short keywords.
- AI crawler access. You check that robots.txt allows crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, not just Googlebot.
- Brand mentions, not just links. Being named on review sites, lists, and industry publications helps assistants associate you with your category.
- Answer monitoring. You test prompts across assistants each month, because no rank tracker shows AI answers well.
Should you prioritize SEO or AEO?
Start with whichever gap is bigger: if Google can’t properly crawl and rank your site, fix SEO first; if you rank but AI assistants never name you, lean into AEO. Most companies end up running both from one plan.
| Your situation | Prioritize | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New site, little content, few rankings | SEO foundation first | AI search draws on pages that are indexed and well linked |
| Pages not indexing, or traffic fell after a redesign | Technical SEO | Nothing ranks or gets cited until crawlers can read the site |
| Ranking on page one, but absent from AI answers | AEO | You have the foundation; you need answer-first content and mentions |
| Buyers compare vendors before calling sales | AEO, with SEO | Shortlist questions like “best X for Y” are where AI answers matter most |
| Local business serving one area | Local SEO first | Map results and Business Profile data drive both local search and many AI answers |
| New category with no search volume yet | AEO and content | Define the category clearly before others define it for you |
How do you run SEO and AEO in one plan?
Treat them as one program with two scorecards. The same pages, written once, can rank in Google and be quoted by AI.
- Fix the foundation. Make sure Googlebot, Bingbot, and AI crawlers can reach every key page, and that content renders without JavaScript.
- Build one question list. Combine your keyword research with the full questions buyers ask AI. Group them by buying stage.
- Give every question one owner page. Avoid several pages competing for the same answer.
- Write answer-first. Open each page with the direct answer, then support it with specifics, tables, and an FAQ.
- Add structured data. Use schema that matches the visible content, so search engines and assistants understand who you are.
- Earn mentions. Get named on the review sites, lists, and publications that rank and get cited in your category.
- Report both scorecards monthly. Track rankings and clicks for SEO, and mention and citation rates for AEO.
This is the approach behind our CITED Method.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AI assistants with search depend on pages that are crawlable and indexed, which is what SEO delivers. AEO extends SEO into AI answers rather than replacing it.
Is GEO different from AEO?
Not meaningfully. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and AEO both describe optimizing for AI-generated answers.
Can one page do both?
Yes. An answer-first page with clear headings, a table, an FAQ, and valid schema can rank in Google and be quoted by AI assistants.
Which is faster to show results?
Technical fixes often help both within weeks. New content and authority usually take a few months for either channel.
Does Google need anything special for AI Overviews?
Google says no. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and normal SEO best practices apply.
