Does schema markup help with AI search?

Schema markup helps, but it is not a shortcut. It labels facts on your page, like who your company is, who wrote an article, what a service costs, in a format machines read reliably. That makes your brand easier to identify correctly. It does not make weak content get cited.

Google is explicit on two points. Its AI Overviews require no special schema to appear (Google AI features guidance). And for any structured data, the markup must describe what users can actually see on the page, with no fake or misleading content (Google structured data guidelines).

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data, written using the shared vocabulary from schema.org, that describes a page’s content in a standard way. Google recommends the JSON-LD format, a small block of code added to the page that doesn’t change what visitors see.

Which schema types matter most?

Start with the types that define who you are, then add types for each kind of page. Use the most specific type that fits.

Page Schema types Why it helps
Every page Organization (or LocalBusiness / ProfessionalService), WebSite Establishes your brand as one clear entity, with logo, contact, and profiles
Homepage Organization + FAQPage (if the FAQ is visible) Connects your name to what you do and answers common questions
Service pages Service, BreadcrumbList Describes each offering, its provider, area served, and price range
Articles Article, Person (author), BreadcrumbList Ties content to a named expert with credentials
Product pages Product, Offer, Review (genuine only) Gives price, availability, and ratings in a standard form
About page Person Describes founders and authors, their roles, and where they’ve worked
Local pages LocalBusiness with areaServed Matches your site to your Google Business Profile

Use the same @id values across pages, for example one ID for your organization and one for each author. This lets search engines and AI tools connect every page back to the same company and people.

What does schema markup look like?

Here is a simple Organization example in JSON-LD. Paste it inside a script tag of type application/ld+json in your page’s head, then replace the values with your own.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "@id": "https://www.example.com/#organization",
  "name": "Example Co",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/",
  "logo": "https://www.example.com/logo.png",
  "description": "Endpoint security software for mid-size companies.",
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/example"
  ]
}

How do you add schema to your site?

  1. Generate it. Use our free schema generator for Organization or LocalBusiness, or your SEO plugin for articles.
  2. Add it to the page. On WordPress, most SEO plugins add core schema automatically; add custom types through the plugin or a header-scripts tool.
  3. Test it. Run the page through Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator.
  4. Monitor it. Check the Enhancements reports in Search Console for errors after publishing.

What are the most common schema mistakes?

The most common mistake is markup that doesn’t match the page. Google’s guidelines require structured data to describe content users can see, and misleading markup can cost you rich result eligibility through a manual action (Google structured data guidelines).

  • FAQ markup with no visible FAQ on the page
  • Fake or self-written reviews marked up as customer reviews
  • Outdated facts: old prices, addresses, or phone numbers
  • Generic types like Thing or WebPage where a specific type such as Service or Product fits
  • Missing required properties, which makes the markup invalid
  • Different company names or addresses across pages, the Business Profile, and directories

Frequently asked questions

Does schema guarantee rich results or AI citations?

No. Google says valid markup makes a page eligible for rich results but doesn’t guarantee them, and AI Overviews need no special schema at all.

Which format should I use?

JSON-LD. Google recommends it, and it is the easiest to add and maintain.

Can schema hurt my rankings?

Invalid markup is usually just ignored. Misleading markup can lead to a manual action that removes rich results, though Google says this doesn’t affect regular ranking.

Do ChatGPT and Perplexity read schema?

They don’t publish how they use it. Clear schema still makes your facts consistent and machine-readable, which can only help, but write for people first.
