What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results, with links to the web pages they draw on. Google also offers AI Mode, a more conversational search experience built on the same idea.

How do you show up in AI Overviews?

To show up, your page needs to be indexed in Google, eligible to show a snippet, and a strong, clear answer to the search. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews beyond normal SEO best practices (Google Search Central).

That’s good news: there is no secret format to learn. The work is solid SEO, done well, with content written so a clear answer is easy to find.

What does Google say is required?

Google’s guidance for AI features comes down to two requirements and a short list of best practices (Google Search Central).

Requirements to be eligible as a supporting link:

  • The page is indexed.
  • The page is eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet.

Meeting these doesn’t guarantee you’ll be shown.

Google’s recommended practices:

  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting settings.
  • Link to important content from other pages on your site.
  • Provide a good page experience.
  • Keep important content in text, with images and video where they help.
  • Make sure structured data matches the visible page text.
  • Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date, if you use them.

Google also says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI-specific text files, or special schema to appear.

What controls do you have?

Control What it does
nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet Limit what text from your page can be shown, including in AI features
noindex Removes the page from Search entirely, including AI features
Google-Extended (robots.txt) Controls use in Google’s other AI systems; Search crawling is governed by Googlebot

How can you improve your chances?

Since AI Overviews rely on normal SEO, the best levers are the ones that make a page the clearest, most trustworthy answer to a specific question.

  • Check the page is indexed with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console
  • Confirm you aren’t using nosnippet or a very low max-snippet by accident
  • Open with a direct one- or two-sentence answer to the page’s main question
  • Use question-style headings that match how people search
  • Add a comparison table or numbered steps where the topic suits it
  • Show who wrote it, with real credentials, and a “last updated” date
  • Link to the page from related pages on your site
  • Make sure any structured data matches what’s visible on the page
  • Cover follow-up questions in a short FAQ
  • Earn links and mentions from respected sites in your field

After changes, give Google time to recrawl. Google notes this can take anywhere from several days to several months, and you can request recrawling in Search Console.

How do you measure AI Overviews traffic?

Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Search Console Performance report, under the Web search type (Google Search Central). They are combined with regular web results rather than broken out separately, so watch trends on pages and queries where AI Overviews commonly appear.

To see whether you are cited, search your target questions in Google and note which sources the overview links to. Check across several days, since overviews change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says no special schema is required. Structured data still helps Google understand your pages, but it must match the visible text.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?

No. Google says no AI-specific text files are needed.

Can I stop my content from appearing in AI Overviews?

Yes, with nosnippet or max-snippet controls, though these also limit your regular snippets. noindex removes the page from Search entirely.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

They can for simple factual questions, where the answer is fully shown. Being a cited source keeps your brand visible even when fewer people click.

Is ranking #1 required to be cited?

No. Cited pages don’t have to be the top result, but they do need to be indexed, snippet-eligible, and a strong answer.
